Domestic violence in film festival spotlight

A short film shot in Jackson that deals with domestic violence has been named a finalist at the West End Film Festival in Brisbane.

It is the first accolade for Calloused Hearts, written and directed by Clancy Sinnamon, who was born and raised on a cattle property near Jackson, 85km east of Roma.

The 20-year-old Bond University student shot the short film on his family's two cattle properties north of Jackson, Tin Hut and Chamarna, which have been in the Sinnamon family for more than 100 years.

"It has always been my dream to return home and make a film out there,” MrSinnamon said.

The cast and crew of 16 people spent six days at the properties shooting the film.

The lead role is played by 15-year-old Mitchell resident Jake Harrison.

"I searched high and low throughout the city looking for someone with an innocent look who has rural experience and Jake was perfect for the role,” the director said.

Mr Sinnamon described the film as a confronting drama that depicts the reality of domestic violence in rural Australia.

"The film centres around domestic violence in an isolated environment,” he said.

"I wanted to start a conversation that allows people either dealing with or witnessing domestic violence to take a moment and think - and I was lucky enough to do that through this medium.”

Calloused Hearts has been entered into national and international festivals, including the prestigious Cannes and Berlin film festivals.

Mr Sinnamon said he wasn't sure what the future held, he just knew he loved telling stories.

"I definitely want to go into making feature films, that's my dream,” he said.

"I'm really quite content in film or television telling through motion picture.

"I want to continue telling stories of the bush and in the bush, because that's what I've grown up knowing.”

Calloused Hearts will screen at WEFF, at the Boundary Street Markets, on May 28.
