DNA helps crack 20-year-old Queensland rape case

NEWLY-obtained DNA evidence has helped Brisbane detectives solve the case of a violent sexual assault from 20 years ago.

Back on March 31 1996, a then 17-year-old woman was walking alone in Woolloongabba when she was allegedly violently physically and sexually assaulted.

While the matter was investigated at the time, no one was charged.

Last year, a man assisting police with their enquiries into an unrelated assault matter had DNA taken as part of their investigation.

The DNA was examined and subsequently matched with evidence taken at the time of the sexual assault in 1996.

As a result, on Saturday, a 51-year-old Bellbird Park man was charged with two counts of indecent assault, and one count each of rape, assault with intent to commit rape and deprivation of liberty.

He is due to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on March 1.

Detective Senior Sergeant Tod Reid praised the Dutton detectives for their dedication to this case.

"This weekend's result goes to show just how determined we all are to solve each and every crime reported to us - even if it takes a while," Detective Senior Sergeant Reid said.

"We will always strive to get a result. We will never give up, no matter how many years pass and offenders who believe they will never be held accountable for crimes they've committed over the years should think again."

Anyone with information which could assist with this matter should contact Crime Stoppers anonymously via 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com.au 24hrs a day.
