Digging in to help local farmers

BLAZEAID volunteers have been working hard in the flood aftermath to help farmers get back on their feet.

Since February the volunteers from the Dunkeld base have been going out cleaning and rebuilding fences for landholders.

Dunkeld co-ordinator Peter Andrew said so far they had covered hundreds of kilometres of fencing.

"We've cleaned 197 kilometres of fencing and stock proofed another 192 kilometres which includes rebuilding," Mr Andrew said.

They currently have 30 volunteers working on five properties.

Mr Andrews said so far their work has had a significant impact on the area.

"We put 10 volunteers on one property where the work seemed overwhelming to the farmer and his wife," Mr Andrews said.

"They managed to get it done in one hit."

Mr Andrew said if landowners in the area needed assistance resurrecting or cleaning their fences they should phone BlazeAid or go to blazeaid.com.

"And if you are interested in helping out please give me a ring on the BlazeAid number 55392935," he said.

Blazeaid has expanded and set up a number of camps to in flood damaged areas of NSW including Narrandera, Wagga Wagga, Ungarie and north of Young.

They are currently looking for people to transport their machinery down from Dunkeld to some of these camps.

If anyone is driving to Sydney, Canberra or Melbourne and are able to take some equipment to NSW please phone Kevin on 0418 530 471.

Blazeaid runs entirely on the support of donations and if you wish to donate money or to see their equipment wish list visit www.blazeaid.com.

The website also provides information about Blazeaid's work, how to volunteer and how to get help fencing.
