A desperate call for "HELP" written in huge letters on a Queensland beach has led to the rescue of a couple after they became stranded during a freak storm.

The man and woman found themselves marooned on an uninhabited island overnight after a wild stormed smashed their 5m fishing boat into rocks.

The couple spent eight long hours on the island, coincidentally named Avoid Island, where they were forced to take shelter in mudflats as three more storms rolled through.

The couple activated an emergency beacon at first light and were found by RACQ CQ Rescue crew on Wednesday morning.

The distressed couple were spotted waving at helicopter crews from the beach and were flown to Mackay at around 11.30am yesterday.

The couple were relatively unharmed, sustaining only a few cuts and bruises.
