Day not sure if he’ll go to Rio over Zika fears

GOLF: World No.1 Jason Day is yet to decide whether he will join the conga line of golfers to withdraw from this year’s Olympic Games.

Golf will be making its first appearance at the Games in 112 years, but due to the perceived threat of the Zika virus in Rio, some of the sport’s biggest names have hardly welcomed its return.

Fellow Australians Adam Scott and Marc Leishman lead an ever-expanding list of confirmed no-shows that also includes Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell, Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel and Vijay Singh.

Bubba Watson, Henrik Stenson, Justin Rose, Sergio Garcia, Byeong-hun An, Danny Lee and Martin Kaymer have given assurances they will represent their country.

But Day remains undecided, as do great rival and world No.2 Jordan Spieth, world No.3 Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler.

The 28-year-old said he would talk with his family and agent Bud Martin about the risks before making a final decision.

“I’ll talk to Bud and family members because family for me is priority No.1, so I want to make sure that they are happy and then from there I’ll make a decision,” Day said.

“It’s a tough one, going from trying to represent your country and trying to win a gold medal, but also understanding it’s a life decision you have to make.”

In the meantime Day is looking ahead to defending his PGA Championship crown next month at Baltusrol and maintaining the No.1 ranking he has held for 17weeks – still some way off the record of Tiger Woods.

“He had 683 weeks at No.1. It’s staggering,” Day replied when asked if he could challenge Woods’ reign. “It’s an absolute joke. I’ve got a lot of work to do.”
