David and Lynn celebrate their half century of marriage
DAVID Bowden still remembers the night in 1965 when he met his future wife Lynn at a dance at the Hibernian Hall.
“My mate was supposed to win her, not me!,” he joked.
The Roma pair will celebrate 50 years of marriage this morning, surrounded by friends and family.
David, a former shearer, life insurance salesman, radio employee, servo attendant, real estate agent and community volunteer, caught Lynn’s eye mainly because of his striking resemblance to a 1950s rock n roll star.
“He had a pretty good sense of humour and he was very handsome,” she said.
“He looked a lot like Buddy Holly!”
After selling their sheep property at Muckadilla due to drought, the couple moved to Rockhampton with their two children, Allan and Leandra.
Lynn highlighted their 15 years in Rockhampton as some of the best times of their lives.
“A lot of the friends we met there are the friends we have now,” she said.
The couple highlighted tolerance and understanding as the keys to a long marriage.
