THEY might only be a small dance troupe in comparison to their competitors, but Roma Highland Dancers definitely make their mark on the stage.

Twenty-two Roma girls were among the 170 overall dancers who travelled to Toowoomba recently for the the South Queensland St Andrew's Day Championships, Darling Downs Titles and supporting events.

Roma Highlands teacher Glenys Hughes said the competition saw talented dancers come from all over Australia.

"The event attracted some very competitive dancers from Tasmania, New South Wales, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba, Lockyer Valley, Warwick, and Roma,” Ms Hughes said.

"Congratulations must go to all the dancers, they competed individually and each one of them came away successful in their respective age groups.”

"Myself, dancer teachers Marissa Reagan and Hannah Hughes are very proud of the great effort from the girls, both in preparing themselves for the high level of competition and presenting themselves on the day.”

Ms Hughes said a special mention must go to Annalise Ey, Lahni Ey, Zara Parker and Isabella Blair who competed in their very first competition.

Also to Riley Bryen who competed in intermediate for the first time and Madison Thomas who competed in her first championship.

"Congratulations to Zara Parker, Amy Lorenz, Allie Ey, Riley Bryen and Nina Johnstone who placed in all the dances they competed in and Mya Lorenz, Lucy Blair, Maeve Moloney, Ava Watson, Amy Lorenz, Allie Ey, Sage Miller, Riley Bryen, Tully Stone and Nina Johnstone who all placed in their respective trophy dance, Darling Downs Title and St Andrew's Day Championship,” Ms Hughes said.

To top the day off the Roma Highlands Dance troupe came home with two extra awards.

"There were two perpetual trophies awarded during the day, and both went to Roma dancers,” Ms Hughes said.

"Riley Bryen was awarded the trophy for the Best Characterization of the Irish Jig and Sailors Hornpipe and Tully Stone was awarded the trophy for The Dancer Best Depicting the Spirit of Highland Dancing.”
