Cycling, health rolled into one with Boobook expo
WHO would have heard of an ecological facility hosting a health expo and cycling event for charity?
That’s the response wildlife co-ordinator Angela Bendall has when organising the Roma Strade Rosso Cycle Challenge in March, alongside the ‘Healthy Eating and Exercise’ expo from Maranoa Wildlife Caring and Education Centre (MWCEC).
“This is our first fundraiser for the year, and all donations will go towards helping MWCEC,” she said.
With the idea coming from senior fauna spotter/catcher and cycling enthusiast Scott Akins-Sellar, Angela said the event grew from combining cycling and wildlife.
“We floated the idea of having an expo for the community alongside Easter in the Country, and it grew from there,” she said.
“All donations and money raised go towards helping MWCEC with wildlife training and equipment maintenance.”
The Strade Rosso course consists of a series of cycling courses that range from 80km to 7km event for younger riders and families, while the MWCEC will host a mini-expo on healthy eating, along with an ankle-biters obstacle course.
“There’s a lot we’re doing to make it a family event, so that everyone can attend and have something to do,” Angela said.
But Boobook will be bringing along a few friends to help with their event, with a carers camp of critters joining the expo as well.
“We’ve got shingleback lizards, joeys and some birds for people to see when they come down,” she said.
“It’s a way of educating people about what wildlife carers do and how they look after animals under their care.
“This will just be a good opportunity to have a great time on Good Friday.”
Registration is available until March 10.
