LETTER: Cruel, Disgraceful puppy farms must be shut down

WHILE most of us are pleased that this appalling issue pertaining to our greyhounds has been brought to the fore, what of another cruel industry that is happening within the background, well hidden from public view, and has been fully functional for decades.

This issue is none other than puppy mill farms, which is equally as gross and sadistic.

These dogs are bred purely for profit, such as the greyhounds.

Puppies are churned out like a factory, their parents kept in cages rarely seeing the light of day, often standing in their excrement, water bowls growing bacteria, often lacking in proper veterinary care and rarely socialised.

Most are bred until such time that their bodies can no longer produce and then disposed of, by being sent to their death or placed within an animal rescue group, that spend vast amounts of money fixing their physical conditions and rehabilitating them.

From the poor conditions in which these puppies are kept a large majority have physical, social and behavioural issues.

Perhaps this issue can be addressed also.
