Crows a test of Cats’ credentials, says Scott

GEELONG coach Chris Scott is treating tomorrow’s home game against Adelaide as a gauge of his side’s premiership credentials.

Scott has seen his side plummet from flag favourites in the past three weeks, courtesy of losses to Sydney and St Kilda and a scrappy 17-point win over Fremantle last Friday night.

Regardless, the seventh-placed Cats sit only one win and half a percentage point behind the second-placed Crows, who are on an eight-match winning streak.

“The highest priority is playing our best football at the end of the year,” Scott said yesterday.

“We need to start building now, because clearly for a number of weeks we’ve been off that.

“Given the way Adelaide are playing, you’d think they won’t lose too many.

“So to isolate it to the two teams, if we’re looking to displace them (in the top four) it’s obviously a really important game.

“Adelaide are the most attacking and best-scoring team in the competition ... if we let them score the way they have been, we won’t win.”

Scott has been working hard with spearhead Tom Hawkins (pictured), who has been below his best this season but has the capacity to take the Cats to another level.

“Tom and I, as coach and key player, spend a lot of time talking about his game,” he said.

“We’re optimistic he’s going to improve quickly.”

Key midfielder Jimmy Bartel, the 2007 Brownlow Medallist, will return for the Cats after being rested from the trip to Western Australia.
