UPDATE: Neighbours extinguish shed fire after "loud bang"

UPDATE: WITNESSES have told of hearing a "loud bang" and neighbours rushing to help extinguish the Gavin St shed fire which is suspected to have been caused by an exploding fuel can.

Neighbour Rob Adames said he heard the noise and headed down the street to the IGA where staff phoned 000.

"I thought 'What the hell was that?' At first I thought it was a car crash."

He and other neighbours including Susan Johnson saw smoke emanating from the shed behind the house.

"I could see it through my backyard. The fire came up quite high, but there was more smoke than fire," Ms Johnson said.

"A couple of neighbours next to me jumped over and put it out with a garden hose."

The fire was reportedly out by the time fire crews arrived. Emergency crews departed just after 10am.

Toura Maguire, who works at the Gavin St IGA, called 000.

"All I heard was this great big bang," Ms Maguire said.
