Taroom delivers Christmas miracles to crash survivors
THREE days before Christmas, Samantha Mellar and her husband Joe were driving from Mirani in north Queensland to their new home at Auburn Station with their dogs when their vehicle rolled over about 30km north of Taroom.
The young couple were taken to Taroom Hospital, where Samantha's back and neck injuries were deemed serious enough to warrant a call to CareFlight, which airlifted her to Toowoomba Hospital.
At the crash site, emergency services searched for the Mellars' pets, two of which were only puppies, and while they were able to locate Diesel, the couple's 12-week-old border collie, the worst was assumed for the remaining animals - two other dogs and two birds.
But on Christmas Eve, something happened that many in Taroom have described as a "Christmas miracle".
Taroom paramedics Clinton McCreery and Simon Stevens returned to the crash site, where they discovered a very hungry, thirsty and tick-covered Loki.

"This truly is a Christmas miracle and I am forever truly grateful for everything that the whole community has done for us," Samantha said.
"A big 'thanks' needs to go to Hugh and Chloe (at Taroom Veterinary Surgery), who opened up late on Christmas Eve to help make this Christmas miracle possible."
But Taroom wasn't yet finished in its gift giving.
A week after the accident, the Mellars received another call about their cattle dog, which was still missing.
"Our final dog was found (after he) wandered up to a property about a kilometre up from the crash site (by) the lovely couple who, mind you, were also the first ones at the crash who helped me," Samantha said.
"None of the dogs were injured - just a few ticks."
Samantha said she and her husband had now mostly recovered from the accident, which was so horrific it made their HiLux "look like a compact car".
The ute rolled four times in the crash, causing its tray to snap off and the trailer they'd been towing to flip.
Samantha said they were lucky to be alive and would never forget the incredible help the pair received from the Taroom community.
"I am recovering well - still very sore and still have a few nightmares from the crash, as I remember everything from the rollover," she said.
"I am just purely glad to have most my babies home and that we are simply alive and well."
