Couples test out their strength at annual wife-carrying races

HUFFING and puffing as they round the course, the wife-carrying races put relationships to the test on Sunday morning at Bassett Park.

In what may be considered one of the more ridiculous sporting contests across the weekend, 14 wives clung to their husband's backs as they fought for glory over the 120 metre route.

Husbands fought tooth and nail for the ultimate prize, the weight of their wife in beer.

"Wife” became a loose term as contestant Tom introduced himself to Nicki, his wife - insofar as the competition was concerned - 10 minutes before registrations closed.

"Hi, I'm Tom, and I don't have a wife for the wife-carrying competition,” he said to Nicki. Ten minutes later they won their heat and found themselves in the final.

Defending champions Alex and Sophie were back, winning their heat in 24 seconds, and going on to take out the coveted prize in the final, in just 22 seconds.
