Construction group provide Mitchell youth with hoop dreams

BASKETBALL: Young people in Mitchell will have another excuse to keep active after a construction group donated a basketball half-court to the town.

Mitchell Youth Precinct will be home to the new 10mx10m court after Maranoa Regional Council accepted the $20,000 donation from KHB Construction Pty Ltd.

The construction group ran Australia Day fundraising events for consecutive years in Mitchell, with the agreement that monies raised would benefit youth which needed assistance or future community projects that would benefit the town.

KHB owners Bully and Lisa Harrison said they were proud to be able to do something for their community.

"We worked really hard on the KHB Young Life Foundation and had a real purpose for doing this project,” Mrs Harrison said.

"The community got behind the whole KHB team and supported the project 100 per cent - we are so grateful because, without the support of our team, the community and Maranoa Regional Council, we would not be able to donate this money to our youth.

"My husband and I believe that educating the youth in our community about mental health, inclusion in schools for everyone and awareness around bullying, is imperative to building a strong community and by giving our youth a half basketball court, we hope this will help with this process.

"Kids need a place to hang out, talk and burn energy and we think this will be the perfect area for all of the youth in our town.”

Deputy Mayor and community engagement councillor Jan Chambers said council was extremely grateful to receive the donation.

"KHB Construction on behalf of the KHB Young Life Foundation are donating to the Mitchell Youth Precinct and council thanks them greatly for that,” she said.

KHB Young Life Foundation have contributed to other organisations including the school chaplain program at the Mitchell State School and some bills for kids with disabilities.
