Community spirit: cafe supports ‘Jack’s Last Gift’

IN THE true meaning of community spirit, one local business is doing their bit to support and remember young Jack Cameron.

Yesterday and today, The Tasting Co are donating $1 from every coffee and iced coffee to Epilepsy Queensland.

The Cameron family set up ‘Jack’s Last Gift’ where family and friends can donate to a cause that is close to their hearts, Epilepsy Queensland in lieu of flowers and gifts.

This $1 donation is not a new initiative for the cafe, owners Celeste and Michael Mayes regularly ensure they’re supporting local causes.

Due to COVID-19, they have had to take a step back in order to support staff’s wages and hours, but this weekend they’re back at it and remembering 10-year-old Jack Cameron.

“Jack played footy with our son and all our staff’s kids,” Mrs Mayes said.

“Our kids swam with Jack at the same club.

“Our manager at Bear and Luca, her daughter taught him – so it’s very close to home and our hearts.

“When we moved to Roma, it was the Cameron family that made our son welcome to football.

“We came from an AFL family and Nick ensured Rory was placed in a team, surrounded by coaches to bring out the best of his ability.

“I remember him saying ‘you have a hell of a kick, we’ll put you in this position.’”

Mrs Mayes said Roma is the reason why they do these fundraisers and ensure they’re giving back.

“The opportunity we have been granted as a family, we can never repay that back to our community but we can show our appreciation,” she said.

“Our thoughts and condolences go out to the Cameron family.”
