Community reeling after tragic death of police officer

THE community is rallying behind the family of a Sunshine Coast police officer who tragically lost her battle with cancer.

A fund has been set up to help the family of child protection detective Detective Senior Constable Kelly Mason whose life was cut short by cervical cancer.

Kelly first joined the police force in 2008. She did stints in Ipswich, Goodna and later the Coast.

Her colleagues described her as an officer with a reputation as a lead with "dogged determination" which gained the admiration of many officers.

Those who knew her well remember her beautiful smile, being a kind soul with a gentle nature.

It was through her detective work where she met her best friend and soul mate Josh Mason.

The couple moved to the Coast and were married shortly after.

It was only late last year when Kelly was stuck down by a rare form of cervical cancer. She battled courageously but died on Saturday aged 33.

A open public funeral for Kelly will be held this Friday, May 4 at 2pm at the Lifepoint Baptist Church in Buderim.

A bank account has been established to assist the family with any financial costs. Each contribution is greatly appreciated.

Yesterday, Joshua's mother Cherie Mason described the 'shining light' that was her daughter-in-law and the terrible sadness the family was feeling.

'Kel never once let her situation bring her down, as sick as she was.'

She said Kelly was very health-conscious and had a love for fitness and the outdoors, especially running, camping and the ocean.

"She was a dynamic little person, very feisty, smiley and happy; she just had a shining personality," Mrs Mason said.

"I can't tell you how much she was loved by everybody."

"It's a very, very sad time for everyone."

Friends and colleagues took to social media to pay their respects.

Kellie Lay "I feel so blessed to have known such a beautiful and brave person. I will always think of you as a true hero Kel, completely inspiring. May your family find comfort in seeing the many many hearts you have touched."

Debbie Berg "You were granted your wings, fly high Kelly, thank you for your service. Heaven is waiting with open arms."

Gilly Ann "Rest in peace beautiful girl. You will be missed dearly.
