Coffee with a conscience: cafe on board to help $80K MS treatment
A COFFEE with a conscience: that's the mission for Roma cafe owners Celeste and Michael Mayes, who every month do their bit to help out a local cause.
This month is no exception, and next week they are getting behind a true battler.
From Monday to Friday, $1 from every coffee sold at The Tasting Co will go towards helping Amanda Weyman-Jones. Their second cafe, Roma Grind, will make a lump sum donation.
For 34 years, Ms Weyman-Jones has been battling degenerating multiple sclerosis, while raising her six children and five miniature dachshunds.
According to her daughter Chloe, Amanda now requires a chemotherapy treatment not currently offered in Australia.
"This treatment is currently the last option available for mum, and she has already been accepted to receive it," she said in her GoFundMe description.
"In a last-ditch effort, I have contacted the National Pirogov Medical Surgical Centre in Russia to do haematopoietic stem cell transplantation, one of the most promising therapeutic options for people with MS."
The treatment has a 70-80% chance of stabilising and improving a patient with secondary progressive MS, like Amanda.
The cost is $80,000: one Chloe has turned to the community to help her with.
"I feel that this treatment is mums get out of jail free card, her final chance to beat this debilitating disease that has taken so much from her and us as children already," Chloe said.
With the treatment set to begin in January next year, the Mayes family have jumped on board to do their part.
"We came across her GoFund Me and it was just heartbreaking," Mrs Mayes said.
"This is her last shot, there's nothing else out there. I'm a nurse and I know how horrible a condition MS is.
"She's got this amazing opportunity, and if we can help her get over there and bring her back, she can keep supporting her kids and continue her business and that would mean the world to us.
"They're so short of their $80K mark. They only have $16K and we thought, we need to do something. The whole town does.
"We need to get behind her and we need to push this."
