Classic cars on show at motor event
CLASSICS, one-of-a-kinds and all things vintage were on display at the National Motoring Heritage Day in Roma on Sunday.
Among them was a 1939 Chevrolet Maple Leaf owned by John Ey.
Mr Ey's parents purchased the vehicle from Canada for 439 pounds, which is equivalent to $900.
Today, Mr Ey said the vehicle was priceless.
"As far as I know it's the only one in Australia,” he said.
"Now that it is restored I'm not exactly sure how much it is worth but no amount of money would ever make me sell it.
"It has too much of a sentimental value to me.”
Mr Ey has spent around six years restoring it to near immaculate condition at a cost of about $20,000.
Although the vehicle sports new paint, wheels, mudguards and shiny new interior, there is one original detail that Mr Ey will never replace.
"This will be passed on to my family,” he said.
"Up on top of the dash there is some of my dad's handwriting and he passed away 35 years ago.
"I never restored that as it just means a lot to me.”
Back when Mr Ey's parents owned the vehicle, it was used as a way of transporting a whole lot of people as they didn't have buses then.
It has been used today as part of a float.
"A musical group at Easter in the Country have used it in the parade,” he said.
