Clashed power lines in Roma causes bushfire and outages

MORE than 500 Maranoa residents were left without power after clashing power lines again caused blackouts and sparked a small bushfire east of Roma.

Roma Fire and Rescue Services were called out to a fire outside the Ergon sub-station at 12.45pm yesterday, which was started from sparks from a power pole falling on tall grass just outside the facility.

Ergon spokesman Rod Rehbein said the disc links on the power pole outside the sub-station caused both the power outage and bushfire.

"Crews believe the lines have clashed and sent a fault current back through the network towards the substation, where it resulted in the disc links on the first pole outside the substation failing and emitting sparks which ignited the fire," he said.

Power was restored just before 5pm yesterday, while fire crews quickly put out the fire.
