Clarkson ‘couldn’t give a toss’ about flag favouritism

AFL: Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson was in a typically feisty mood as he left for Sydney ahead of his side’s blockbuster clash with the Swans.

The winner of the game at the SCG will be top of the ladder, and flag favourite, but according to Clarkson: “For those that are in the game, we couldn’t give a toss about who is premiership favourite at this point in time.

“It’s about who’s playing the best footy in September and early October and that will continue to be our focus.”

While the Hawks’ issues with winning contested ball have been well documented, tonight they come up against the No.1 team for those hard-ball gets.

Clarkson, though, said: “We don’t give a toss about that either. We’ve won five contested ball contests in about two years ... (and) we’ve still won lots of games of footy.

The Hawks, who have won their past six games since losing to the Swans in May, will be without premiership midfielder Liam Shiels (hamstring).
