Citroen DS3 launched with higher price and extra features

THE updated Citroen DS3 now sports a more powerful engine, better fuel efficiency, advanced safety features and an enviable inclusions list.

A new 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine has boosted the power from 115kW to 121kW with improved torque delivery with 240Nm now available from 1400rpm.

The range has been streamlined, too, with the DS3 DSport - in hatch and cabrio - the lone model available and mated to a six-speed manual transmission only.

The extra niceties come at a cost, though, with the hatch priced from $33,990 (up $4250) and the cabrio from $36,590 (up $3600).

The French manufacturer says that rise is offset by $5550 worth of value-adding extras with all DSport cars now including reversing camera with parking sensors, 17.7cm infotainment system with reverse camera and Bluetooth connectivity, auto headlights and wipers and a host of active and passive safety features.

This is, says Citroen Australia, a considered move with the company finding that base grades didn't work for them here with customers generally opting for the highly optioned models.

"Traditionally, DS3 customers purchase vehicles with every option ticked, so the new line-up better reflects the desires of Australian DS 3 customers," said Citroen Australia's national sales manager Shaun Mackle.

"We will not be the cheapest, but we will offer vehicles that customers expect and quite frankly buy."

Individuality is at the heart of the DS3 premise and this edition can customise the roof, mirrors, interior and decals with up to 200 colour and print combinations.

Citroen is looking to the Audi A1, the segment-leading Mini Cooper and Alfa Romeo MiTo as the main competition for the DSport.

Pricing:

DS3 DSport hatch: $33,990

DS3 DSport cabrio: $36,590
