Cities score hometown victory

RUGBY LEAGUE: The smell of Deep Heat was thick in the air on Sunday afternoon at the Arthur Beetson Oval when Roma Cities A-grade took on the Chinchilla Bulldogs.

The Dogs were first to post points on the board, with Neil Hooper and Jeff Gilbert scoring a try each and Hooper converting one, but it was Roma Cities who kept up momentum, and seemed unstoppable in their 52-16 victory.

Twenty minutes in Cities centre Matty Waits posted a try as Roma dominated possession for the remainder of the first half.

Billy Coonan posted a try, Jake Street got one in the corner and James Brennan took a dive under the posts.

By the half time whistle it was 26-10 in Cities' favour.

The Bulldogs came out of the kennel with a little more ferocity in the second half to claim a lot more ball time but it still wasn't enough.

Cities kept posting tries but were unsuccessful with most of their conversions.

A miracle kick by Michael Fletcher saw the ball inexplicably banana in the air to convert Tommy Capel's try.

Waits and Coonan scored another try each and Tom Barron also nabbed two tries in the second half.

Of Roma's 11 tries, only four were converted.

Despite the ever-widening gap in the scoreboard, Chinchilla never gave up.

They continued to hit hard and kept Cities on their toes when they had possession on the try line.

Their tenacity paid off when Hooper scored a try and converted it taking Chinchilla to 16.

Roma put the icing on the cake with two more tries and a conversion at full time to take the game to 52-16.
