Police name motorcyclist killed in night crash near Ipswich

AN IPSWICH man has died in a tragic motorcycle accident at Chuwar, just north of the CBD.

Andrew Alford, 46, was riding a trail bike along Langlands St at Chuwar - not far from his home - about 9.20pm on Thursday night when he lost control, hitting a give-way sign, before being thrown off the bike.

Bystanders tried desperately to save his life by carrying out CPR, but their brave efforts were to no avail, and Mr Alford was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said they believed the man was doing a test ride at the time and was not wearing proper safety equipment, including a helmet or footwear.

Inspector Keith McDonald said the incident was an "absolute tragedy".

"There's an indication from witnesses that he was travelling at a reasonable speed," Insp McDonald said.

"The problem was that when he has fallen off the bike he had no protection on his head."

Initial police investigations focussed on eliminating the possibility that another vehicle may have caused the rider to take evasive action.

Police now believe that only the motorcycle was involved.

Investigations are continuing.
