Children kick it at league sign-on days
Rugby league season for children of the Maranoa has kicked off, with young faces turning up for team sign-ons held at the weekend.
The Carnarvon Cubs sign-on was held at the Roma Cities ground on Friday evening, with numerous young faces, new and old, lining up to grab a uniform.
"We're looking forward to the season, it should be a good one as we are more organised than last year,” Carnarvon Cubs Club president Nick Cameron said.
"Numbers are looking good for this season. If we can get 100 to sign on, that would be nice. Last year we had 163 registered.
"We hope to achieve three under six teams, three U10 teams, two U12 teams and one U14 team.
"We have some new sponsors on board this year, Goodman Fielder, which is the Wonder White on the front of the new jerseys and AGL on the back.
We also have to Lutch family and Wild Desert on the shorts.”
The Roma Saints team held its sign-on at Roma touch grounds on Saturday.
After signing their names to the club, children played fun matches on the pitch.
"The sign on has been going well, we have had roughly 70 kids sign up before the sign-on, and there are more coming to pick up their gear, so many kids wanting to have a game,” Roma Saints Club president Matt Edwards said.
"Being a new club, switching away from St John's to the Roma Saints, we are hoping to see numbers similar to last year, around 120 kids in total.
"It's great to have a number of sponsors come on board with us, and we have the new uniforms available.
"I want to thank Leonie Whitfield, Leonie Green and the other ladies for helping to organise apparel and the sign-on.
"It's great both boys and girls are getting involved, it gets them off the computer and outside”.
The team's first games will be later this month, where they will square off in the Adrian Vowles Cup in Charleville.
