Cher, 71, and Celine Dion wow world at Billboard Awards

SHE celebrated her 71st birthday on the weekend, but music icon Cher can still compete with pop stars less than half her age.

The entertainment industry veteran was given the Icon Award at today's Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas, and entertained the masses with faithful renditions of two of her biggest hits: The 1998 smash Believe, and 1989's If I Could Turn Back Time.

With a brief costume change in between, both songs saw Cher done figure-hugging sheer leotards - including what is perhaps her most iconic look, the G-string / leotard / leather jacket ensemble from the original Turn Back Time video.

Almost 30 years after she originally wore it, Cher proved she could still rock the revealing outfit, her tattoos visible underneath the sheer material.

In a short-but-sweet speech to accept the award from presenter Gwen Stefani, Cher was modest about her career success - but saved one boast for her incredible body.

"I'm 71 yesterday and I can do a five-minute plank, OK. Just sayin'," she announced.

Attributing her five-decade career to "luck - and a little bit of something thrown in," she recounted advice that both her mother and first husband Sonny Bono had given her.

"You're not going to the smartest, the prettiest, the most talented - but you're going to be special," they'd told her.

Billboard Awards' most cringeworthy moment

Ironically for an awards show that spent much of its running time focused on the biggest pop stars of the past 12 months, it was Cher and fellow diva Celine Dion who provided the night's most stunning performances.

Dion marked 20 years since the release of her Titanic theme song My Heart Will Go On with a tear-jerking rendition of the hit power ballad.
