CHARLEVILLE State School students got a taste of the ins and outs of basketball for the first time.

Luke Radford, Suncorp district banking manager, introduced the students to the game with eight weeks of training sessions throughout term one.

"The kids are keen to play basketball,” Radford said.

"You can see the benefits, they are happy and have something to do.”

Radford, who hails from Toowoomba, brings with him experience as a GPS coach.

For the greater part, training sessions saw primary school students learn drills and about how the game works.

"Basketball is a game where you have to work together,” Radford said.

"You have to help each other and you can't succeed without that.”

Basketball provides learners with sport skills that are directly transferable to other

sports, like hand-eye coordination.

The after hours program saw two groups of 15

divided into younger and older age groups to take part in drills.

"The kids love the game,” Radford said.
