Charity postie trek gets taste of Roma hospitality

A FAMILY of riders from New South Wales on a massive motorbike trek to raise money for a local legend have been given a dose of classic Roma hospitality this week from our Lions Club.

The Jindaboonda Postie Trek, which started in Possum Brush on the Central Coast of NSW, has raised travelled thousands of kilometres and raised nearly $50,000 for cancer research in honour of the late Dennis ‘Jindaboonda’ Jeffer – a man greatly respected in their community.

When the group of around 40 riders and support staff were forced to detour after their original destination (Cameron Corner) was rained out, they got a taste of how south-west Queensland treats travellers in need.

Organiser Daniel Krans said the group’s connections with Lions helped them greatly after the detour, with Roma’s club putting on a free dinner for the riders on Monday as well as donating $500 to their cause.

“This local Lions Club sponsored us with just 24 hours’ notice,” he said.

“Every club has gone above and beyond what we expected.”

Lions weren’t the only ones going above and beyond, with Tania from Ups and Downs Homestay putting the group up at short notice, while D&R’s Motorcycles also repaired one of their bikes for free.

All money goes to the Australian Cancer Research Foundation.

Lions Roma president Garry Law said he was proud to be able to support a worthy cause, even at short notice.
