FORGET business up the front, party at the back - Kurri Kurri's inaugural Mulletfest, in celebration of the world's dodgiest haircut, just partied.

A multitude of mullets - and their owners - fronted up to compete in five 'best mullet' categories - every day, grubby, ranga, ladies and junior mullet - at the Chelmsford Hotel at Kurri Kurri in the NSW Hunter Valley on Saturday.

From those winners a best of the best winner emerged - Shane "Shag" Hanrahan of nearby Denman.

"This is the first trophy I've ever had," he told AAP after drinking Jim Beam from the silver cup.

"I can't believe it." Mr Hanrahan, whose waist-length mullet has gone uncut since 1986, said.

He celebrated the win by leading the band, the Stunned Mullets, in a rendition of Dirty Deeds by AC/DC.

Those who hadn't had time to grow their own could opt for artificial assistance, according to the Mulletfest Facebook page.

The festival was conceived about six months ago, with local hairdresser and Mulletfest host Laura Hawkins saying her humble mining town could lay claim to being the spiritual home of the mullet.

"The mullet scene is very strong here," she told news.com.au.

More than 150 mullet-owners registered to compete for the title of ultimate mullet.
