Caruso never doubted ability despite winning drought

MOTORSPORT: Nissan driver Michael Caruso’s self-belief is so strong, he never doubted he could return to the winners’ circle despite a seven-year drought heading into the last Supercars round in Darwin.

He took out just his second chequered flag at the top level in the first of two races at the Top End last month, before finishing sixth on the Sunday.

But the Sydney product is now seventh in the championship and only 240 points behind leader Jamie Whincup.

He takes plenty of confidence from his results at Hidden Valley leading into the two races at the Townsville 400 this weekend, with two practice sessions tomorrow.

The 33-year-old always had a clear idea how hard it was to record a Supercars victory during his winning drought, and in a funny way that kept him so focused.

“Not everything in this sport is circumstantial – your equipment has to be right and you’re racing in a 26-man field,” Caruso told Australian Regional Media.

“It’s not like a game of football where your team has a better chance of winning – there are a lot of obstacles.

“But I’m really happy with the way things are going at the moment.”

Caruso revelled in the hot conditions in Darwin, and more heat will greet him in north Queensland.

“Living in Melbourne it feels like it’s less than 10 degrees for 80% of the year, so it’s nice to get some sun,” he said.

Caruso finished 15th and 11th in Townsville last year and will need better results this weekend if he wants to edge closer to Whincup.

“Darwin is a lot more open than the street circuit in Townsville, so you’ve always got to watch out for those concrete walls,” Caruso said.

“But the car’s felt really strong lately.”
