Car park rage: motorist bumps woman “bagsing” space

A WOMAN who was holding a car park space for a friend was twice nudged by a motorist in a case of car park rage at Eumundi.

The Maroochydore Magistrates Court heard that the woman was standing in the space while her friend did a U-turn to come back to it when Jeffrey Kenneth Williams drove up to it on February 24.

It was the day of the mid-week markets, when car parking spaces in the town are at a premium.

The court was told that when the woman said she was holding the spot, he moved his vehicle forward until it touched her legs, forcing her to step back quickly.

Mr Williams drove at her a second time, again striking her legs and forcing her backwards.

In a police interview, Mr Williams said he thought he had stopped the car before it touched the woman but it must have moved forward.

Lawyer Steven Brough, representing Mr Williams, said his client had disputed the victim's right to be on the road "bagsing" the space.

"He didn't think she had the right to do that," he said.

Mr Brough said his client, a 50-year-old bricklayer and BMX coach, did not remember striking the woman with his car.

But Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist thought he should have, saying "you've got a selective memory in terms of what's occurred."

Mr Williams, who pleaded guilty to driving without due car and attention, was fined $800 and given a stern warning by Mr Stjernqvist.

"If you want a car park, get to the markets a bit earlier."
