The Rockhampton man is charged with one count of entering a premises and one count of dangerous driving after entering an occupied car via the back passenger door and "struggling" with the driver, causing the car to crash into the Archer St entrance of City Centre Plaza.

Vairy's defence lawyer told the court he was running from two men he had had an altercation with the night before and "jumped in the car to see if the woman could drop him to the police station."

The defendant claimed the two men were walking towards the centre from the Rockhampton city police station in Bolsover St.

His facial wounds could be seen as he stood in the docks of the courtroom with a broken nose and cuts to his face.

Vairy's application for bail was denied and he will be remanded in custody until his next appearance next month.

UPDATE 10.15AM: IN a shocking development into the crash at City Centre Plaza on Sunday, a Queensland Police Service spokesman said the incident occurred during an alleged "hijacking".

The spokesman said a 34-year-old man jumped into the back of the Mazda hatchback while a 41-year-old woman, 10-year-old girl and nine-year-old boy were still inside.

The man reportedly "climbed over the kids" to get to the front where the woman was in the driver's seat.

Police said the woman struggled with the man, causing the vehicle to crash into the City Centre Plaza loading bay.

It is believed the man will today face court charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle and break and enter.

The spokesman said there was no mention of the man being armed.
