UPDATE: The intersection of Brisbane and Clay streets at West Ipswich is now open to traffic after a traffic crash this morning.

Police had earlier blocked off the route after a driver lost control of his car before crashing into a shopfront and damaging a gas pipe.

The area was initially closed to traffic to allow fire crews to secure the damaged gas pipe.

The site has since been given the all clear.

EARLIER: Police have blocked off an area near the corner of Brisbane and Clay streets at West Ipswich after a car collided with a gas pipe.

The collision ruptured the pipeline and emergency services were called to the scene at 10.30am.

Fire crews have since isolated the rupture although some businesses were evacuated.

Police believe the driver suffered a medical condition, causing him to crash into the building, before continuing along Clay Street, eventually coming to rest in the front yard of a house.

Investigations in the incident are continuing.
