Toowoomba Film Society's Southpaw birthday screening
THE Toowoomba Film Society is celebrating its second birthday ... and you're invited.
This small, but dedicated team of young film enthusiasts is bringing quality independent, art house and foreign cinema to Toowoomba.
As a not-for-profit society, they do what they do for the love of it, but need community support to help them continue.
Founder Stephen Payton said it was an exciting year ahead, and they would continue screening a diverse program of films on the last Thursday of each month, at The Strand.
"For our birthday event, we're screening Southpaw, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, one of the more mainstream films we've done.
"We've also got exciting announcements about the year and are privileged to be the first in Toowoomba to announce the program for the Sydney Travelling Film Festival."
Society co-director Ally Beckman said the group had expanded in the last year, with some packed-out screenings.
"We get a lot of regulars and after they discuss the film, what they got out of it.
"They're grateful for what we do."
But she said the biggest hurdle for the society to overcome was inconsistency of attendance.
"We need people to support us."
The society has also welcomed a third crew member, Chloe Dalamaras, who will be running promotion and photography.
"I'm planning on studying film and was talking to Stephen and thought I'd come and help out.
"Toowoomba often misses out (on non-mainstream films) and having a society helps us."
