CALLIOPE man Gert Johannes Coetzee, sentenced to a jail term after stabbing his girlfriend's Maltese terrier and throwing it into a fire while it was still alive, is free on bail pending his sentence appeal.

While in a drunken frenzy Coetzee, 34, threatened to kill the small dog on Boxing Day.

When the case went before Gladstone Magistrates Court earlier this year, police prosecutor Gavin Reece said Coetzee grabbed it, stabbed it in the shoulder and threw her into a lit brazier.

The dog escaped and ran away but was found the following day and taken to a vet for treatment for a knife wound that went through to the chest cavity.

Magistrate Penelope Hay heard from Coetzee's lawyer that he was normally a loving father whose behaviour changed after drinking alcohol.

Coetzee, who already had two months of a suspended sentence hanging over his head from other charges, had four months jail added to those two months.

He also received two months jail for other offences with Ms Hay setting a parole release date of May 3.

Coetzee is now appealing that release date.

As well as the prison sentence, Coetzee was ordered to pay restitution of $1414.90 to Queensland Police for the cost of vet treatment.
