Call for action to fix neglected Roma park

In a far cry from its former glory, Campbell Park sits in a state of neglect, with rubbish accruing on its once manicured lawns.

The park was once a community hub, with a fountain, picnic area and small zoo in the 1970s.

However, after vandalism, the zoo closed, the amenities were lost and many park visitors stopped attending.

Now the occasional visitors it does get treat it badly.

There are no rubbish bins on site, and it is strewn with litter.

Roma resident Claudia Garland recently visited the park.

"We were taking the kids for a drive, there were a few tracks through the grass, and when we got to the top there was just trash every- where,” Ms Garland said.

"People go and eat their lunch up there and then leave the rubbish. But in all respect to them there are no bins.”

A release from Maranoa Regional Council Portfolio Chair for Towns and Surrounds Councillor Geoff McMullen, states the park lacks regulation due to its status.

"The State Government discontinued the site as a designated roadside stopping place around 2005/2006,” it said.

"It is now only an access road, and no longer a park, and as a result there are no bins provided.”

Roma locals have been cleaning the park regularly, but many call for a long-term solution.

Apex Roma secretary Tyson Campbell said the community group was willing to discuss plans to rejuvenate the park, if there was community interest.

"We have a number of projects on the go right now, however we would be willing to look at a fix-up for the park in the near future,” Mr Campbell said.

"It would be great to add some picnic tables, toilets, a caravan spot and potentially a plasma cut feature, to the grounds.

"What we would need to do is have a community meeting and maybe set up an event, such as a barbecue day, where the town comes together to clean up the park.”

All expressions of interest should be forwarded to the Roma Apex group at roma-apex@live.com.au.
