Butchers are becoming a rare breed
BUTCHERS like George Ladbrook and Grant Crockford are hard to come by these days.
Australian Meat Industry Council's deputy chairman for Queensland John Yeo told APN the number of butchers in Australia had dropped from 30,000 to 3000 in the last 30 years.
He said independents needed to band together to keep money local and support producers.
Grant Crockford, from Roma's Queensland Country Meats, has been a butcher all his life and it was sad to see less and less small shops.
He said customers could get better customer service and higher quality goods from a butcher.
Mr Crockford said looking at the price per kilo, instead of the overall price was the best way to compare costs.
George Ladbrook, from Ladbrook's Butchery in Roma, said he had added specialist products to help compete with takeaway shops and supermarkets.
"I don't think it will get to the point of no butchers... you've got to roll with the times," he said.
