Bungling Roma courthouse hoaxer jailed
AN IPSWICH teen involved in a bomb hoax call to the Roma Courthouse was trying to reach central Roma St court in Brisbane.
Daniel Jagger Hyde, 18, was jailed this week after pleading guilty in Ipswich District Court to committing a bomb hoax.
The court heard on August 6 last year Hyde and a friend were drinking when his friend used Hyde's phone to call the Roma courthouse - thinking it was the much busier Roma St courthouse in Brisbane.
The phone was answered by a female receptionist, and the caller told her there was a bomb in the courthouse.
"Oi … you slut, there's bomb in the courthouse you dirty slut. We're going to blow you to bits," he said.
Another man was heard laughing in the background.
Ten minutes later Hyde called the courthouse on the same phone and told the court registrar it was his 10-year-old brother who made the call and gave a false name, which he later told police was the name of someone who "dobbed him in" on other charges.
The Crown argued the second call was made by Hyde to "cover his tracks".
Roma police were called immediately and the court evacuated.
The district court was sitting at the time with lawyers, the judge and associates, court support staff and a jury all forced to evacuate.
The court heard the woman who took the initial call said she was terrified and afraid for her life.
Hyde turned himself in to police and admitted his part in the crime but refused to name the friend who made the original call.
When police told Hyde what was said during the initial bomb threat he laughed, the court heard.
Judge Sarah Bradley said Hyde's youth was the only positive thing he had going for him. She sentenced him on the basis that he didn't make the initial call but his second call did little to allay the fears of those inside.
His phone was used with his consent and his laughter during and after the call showed his lack of concern.
He was sentenced to nine months jail with a parole release date in three months.
