Bullets to deliver straight-shooting advice for kids
BASKETBALL: The Brisbane Bullets are getting set to shoot some hoops in Roma next week with the Basketball in the Bush tour hitting the region.
National Basketball League players Cameron Bairstow, Stephen Holt, Tyrell Harrison and Will Magnay will first visit Roma State College in the morning before jumping over to St John's School later in the afternoon.
Following this, the players will then host a skills clinic from 3.30-5pm with a Maranoa Heat coaching and skills session at the Roma PCYC.
Maranoa Basketball Association president Mat Gane said the visit would be a great opportunity for kids to learn from a professional athlete.
"The main thing for the kids to take from it is the advice from people who train at an elite level,” he said.
"Passing on that message of hard work and clean living can help anyone achieve their goals.”
The tour has been 12 months in the making and the association is now hoping to organise a half time performance at a Brisbane Bullets game, Mr Gane said.
"The possibility of playing in front of a big crowd would be very exciting for the kids, especially those living in regional areas who may not get to travel to a big city often,”
Mr Gane acknowledged all the behind the scenes work from the Maranoa Basketball Association committee and sponsors to organise the tour.
"We're a very small committee, but extremely hard working,” he said.
"Their ongoing commitment to delivering sport in regional areas has to be recognised as well as the hard work from sponsors and volunteers.
"Who knows, maybe one day we can host a pre-season game here in the Maranoa.”
