Bubba’s on Cloud Nine after Cup day
RACING: TRAINER and jockey team Pat Webster and Bubba Tilley have again combined to dominate the jewel in the crown of country racing, the Roma Cup.
In stifling heat, Webster said it was a tough day, however he was "over the moon" to bag two wins and a third at the most prestigious race meet in the south-west.
Webster said four-year-old gelding, King of the Flame had enjoyed two wins from two starts since entering work with him in St George.
King of the Flame was taken to the Roma racecourse in preparation for the Roma Cup.
"(I) galloped him and gave him a look at the track to see if he handled the track - it's a sand track up there," he said.
"Everything was all good so we pressed on to running him on Cup day."
Webster said he and Tilley sat down before the Roma Cup and made decisions about which rider was going to ride which horse.
"We talk about it leading up to the race. So he knows what I have got going to the races," Webster said.
"Generally he rides all of mine, unless a couple of weeks out, I might not think I will have one in that race (and) he will take another ride."
Webster said Tilley had already locked in the ride on Ateaces in Race 7, so a different jockey was needed to run Shakes in the same race.
He was happy with the performance of his horses at the Roma Cup.
"Most of the horses raced really good and the two winners we had won by big margins. I was over the moon with them," he said.
"Even the one that came third, (Torero), he stumbled out of the barriers and made up a lot of ground."
Singing the praise of Tilley, Webster said "he rides the Roma track better than anyone else".
Tilley said his success at the biggest race meet in the region didn't quite sink in until the day after the races but since then he had "been on Cloud Nine."
"The amount of messages I got from people who saw the race - it was a real thrill," he said.
"And to do it on Pat's horses was an even better feeling.
"Knowing all the work that Pat, Warren and I have put in over the last three or four months - it was just a thrill."
