OPINION: Bring back the cane and with it some respect

YESTERDAY was day one at school for hundreds of children across Ipswich and the rest of Queensland.

Most would have been wearing their school uniforms to bed for the past week waiting for their big day, when they could kiss their parents goodbye at the school's front gate.

When we reflect back on our lives we are handed small snapshots of what our life was about.

If you're like me you can recall these moments with great detail, yet, when asked about many other times in our life we struggle to remember any details.

One moment most of us can reflect back on is our first few years in school.

I still shudder thinking about iron lady Mrs Iverack, who was my first class teacher and wielded a feather duster with great dexterity and a lot of hidden joy.

"Touch your toes, Mr Chapman", was her order before you were reminded with a whack you couldn't poke your tongue out at the girls.

I know the children of today won't have to live with such memories, but just maybe for some of them it wouldn't be a bad idea to bring back the rod.

It certainly had all our attention at school and we tried very hard to make sure we didn't have to put our hand out in front of our classmates.

We had respect for our teachers and this flowed back to everyone we came into contact with.

Do the majority of kids today show respect? I'll let you answer that.
