Brickie makes 6.5kg of party drug at Coast home

A 65-YEAR-OLD man produced enough of an illegal party drug at his Coast home to make more than 21,000 pills, a court has heard.

Crown prosecutor Alex Stark told Maroochydore District Court on Monday that bricklayer Christopher Paul Shirley had assisted his daughter's partner to make 6.538kg of MDA powder.

Mr Stark said MDA was a similar drug to MDMA, often referred to as ecstasy.

He said Shirley's Verrierdale property was raided in July 2015 about the same time his daughter's partner was arrested by New South Wales police with the powder.

The court heard the seizure was worth up to $261,000 if sold wholesale and worth up to $544,000 if sold in pill form.

Mr Stark said police also found enough equipment and ingredients to make as much or more MDA than what they had seized.

Shirley spent 386 days in jail on the charge before being freed on bail last year

He had pleaded guilty to producing a dangerous drug and possessing a thing used in the commission of a crime at a court appearance prior to Monday's.

Defence barrister Anthony Kimmins said his client was diagnosed with a health problem in 2014 which effectively forced him to stop work.

Mr Kimmins said Shirley was convinced by his daughter's partner to allow him to conduct his drug production business at Shirley's home.

He described Shirley as "a dog's body" but Mr Stark said that description understated Shirley's involvement.

Judge Gary Long adjourned the case to consider his sentence.
