Bondi hipsters expand to the US for season two

THE creative minds behind the Bondi Hipsters are going global. American streaming service SeeSo (owned by NBC Universal) has come on board as a production and broadcasting partner for the second season of Soul Mates.

The sketch comedy series stars Christiaan Van Vuuren and Nick Boshier, who rose to fame with their viral Bondi Hipsters videos.

Van Vuuren tells The Guide they weren't asked to change the series to suit their new American audience.

"They (SeeSo) were quite specific about the fact they loved the local nature of the show," he said.

"They said 'We don't want you to do anything differently in terms of making it feel more international. We want our audience to feel like they're watching something from somewhere else'."

The Bondi Hipsters, the Cavemen and the Kiwi Assassins are all back in season two.

"The story for the assassins this time is that up-and-coming Maori rugby players have been going missing and popping up at Australian private schools," Boshier said.

"The Aussies are importing rugby players, so cracking this people-smuggling ring is their main mission for season two."

A new sketch, set in ancient Egypt, focuses on a royal family.

"The pharaoh has two sons. Nick plays one of the sons who's tasked with building a tomb for the other son," Van Vuuren said.

"Nick's this dark child while the big brother is a demi-god and a warlord."

Van Vuuran also became a father in the two years since season one of Soul Mates. His son Felix makes several cameos in the new season.

"We made a silly music video the other day where Nick and I were dressed in lobster suits in the shallows of the water and Nick nudged me and went 'Oi bro, you've got a kid mate'."

Soul Mates airs Wednesdays at 9.35pm on ABC1.
