Nobody expected what happened between Phoenix and Wanderers

NOBODY saw that coming.

Not even in their wildest dreams would the Wellington Phoenix players, coaching staff, fans or officials have imagined they would travel to Sydney and beat the high-flying Western Sydney Wanderers 5-2.

And striker Blake Powell, who had scored just four goals this season, would surely not have even considered the possibility he would double that tally in one glorious afternoon at Parramatta Stadium.

Not only did the former Sydney FC player become the first Wellington player to score four goals in a single game, with every one of them right out of the top shelf, he went into the record books as the first player from any club to score three or more goals in an A-League match this season.

Incredibly, Western Sydney had arguably the better of the first half, with nine shots on goal to three, but the visitors clearly made the most of their opportunities to go to the break 3-0 ahead.

Blake stretched that to four before Mitch Nicholls and Mark Bridge gave home fans a glimmer of hope with a goal apiece, but a 90th minute penalty to Michael McGlinchey put the icing on the cake for the Phoenix who had scored just six goals in their previous nine matches.
