UPDATE: 12.15PM

THE owners of a Glenfields Blvd home in Mountain Creek were away and the house was empty when nearby residents Tegan Clare and her partner Steven Schroeders noticed smoke coming from the garage door as they drove past.

They stopped and tried to check if anyone was inside and also called emergency services.

Maroochydore fire station officer Greg Scarlett said had the fire been left for three or four minutes longer there would have been much more serious damage.

He said it appeared the fire had started in an alarm system in the garage and had started to spread into the roof before fire fighters were able to bring it under control.

Crews reported black smoke issuing from the garage.
