Wallumbilla’s battle of the bands
PCAP may be a thing of the past, but the future of Maranoa music still looks bright.
For many years the much-loved Priority Country Area Program organised musical events across the wider region, including the winter music festival.
Though the organisation has long since disappeared, a handful of dedicated volunteers have combined to keep the spirit of Maranoa instrumental music alive, and with it, the annual winter march and carnival.
This year it was back in Wallumbilla and students from Roma, Mitchell, Injune, Surat and Yuleba joined locals at the Wallumbilla Showgrounds on a beautiful winter's morning.
Hundreds of locals, families, friends and supporters turned up to cheer on the music makers.
If the weather was fresh, it didn't take long for the musicians to warm up as they marched up and down the recently renovated grounds. Then it was inside the Bendemere Pavilion for a selection of favourite tunes.
The appreciative crowd of parents and friends heard from the RSC string ensemble, the Maranoa stage band, the symphonic wind band and string, wind and concert groups from each of the schools.
"It's lovely to see my boy on the stage," one proud parent said. "But it's also just wonderful to appreciate all this great talent in our midst."
