Best friends Glenda and Mary reflect on 40 years of Roma Meals on Wheels

MEALS on Wheels in Roma has been running for 40 years - and best friends Mary Johnson and Glenda Hacker have been there for 36 of them.

The pair have delivered literally thousands of meals to Roma's disabled, impaired and elderly residents on the third Wednesday of nearly every month since 1980.

Ms Hacker and Ms Johnson, who have been best friends for more than 50 years, marked the 40th anniversary this week by reflecting on how they first came to join the volunteer service all those years ago.

"We were both working at the school tuckshop at the time, and Mary's sister-in-law was the convenor - she was short on volunteers so we put our hand up,” Ms Hacker said.

"We then just caught up once a month and got lunch afterwards.

"Our next delivery date is on October 12.”

Ms Johnson said the reason the two women have continued comes down to the people they have helped over the decades.

"Some people will meet you at the door and others won't let you leave,” she joked.

"We're providing a service and you get to have a yarn with them. It's nice to know you're helping someone.”

Meals on Wheels need more volunteers, so for more information, call 0417 195 434.
