Believe it: this photo was taken by a nine-year-old boy

MARANOA kid Daniel Goddard knew he would get a good photo if he went out to the closest dam at 5am – but he didn’t realise how good it would be.

The distance education student has taken out first prize in his category of the My Favourite Place Photography Competition by the Museum of Tropical Queensland.

The shot, known as Deelamon Delight, was taken at sunrise at a place known as ‘The Swamp’ at Daniel’s home on Deelamon Station, roughly halfway between Mitchell and Bollon.

But this wasn’t a photo opportunity that fell into Daniel’s lap – he said he needed his dad to wake him up early in the morning to get the photo.

“We had to get up at 4.30am and went down there at 5am,” he said.

“I try to look for nice scenery and we have a fair bit of it here.

“I know that sunrises look really pretty – I was really quite surprised that I’m such a good photographer.”

Daniel said his passion for photographer started school, when he got his hands on a standard point-and-click camera.

“When I was in prep we got this little camera for school so I was taking little photos of our dog,” he said.

“When I have the chance, I’ll take photos and keep on going.”

Daniel’s mother Christie said her son had always had an interest in photography, but was surprised to see the quality in his work.

“He was really keen to get a sunrise photo, because he’s been into photography for a while,” she said.

“He took a lot of photos that morning and there were actually quite a few good ones, but I guess I was a bit surprised.

“He really listened to advice and tips on things and I know his father spent time speaking with him. I’ve given him a few lessons and his tutor helped him as well.”
