Basketballers break championship drought
BASKETBALL: Taking on the best clubs in the region, Maranoa Basketball Association broke their medal drought in Toowoomba on the weekend, coming home with silver medals for the Heat men's and under 14 boys.
The fifth annual Darling Downs Championships welcomes clubs from Toowoomba, the surrounding region as well as some invitational sides.
MBA president Mat Gane said it was the association's best performance at the championships.
"This is our best performance. We've been coming to these championships with all teams making finals and two going through to the grand final,” he said.
"We've worked hard all year long and over the term three break to get all the teams ready, and it showed in our results.
"I can't thank our coaches, managers, parents and a couple of men's players from outside of Brisbane enough for all the work they put in to the four teams to the tournament, our strongest representation yet.”
The reserve grade men took three wins in the pool rounds and won the semi-final before going down to a talented Sunnybank U18s select side.
"The men had a 4-1 record overall with points from the championships also contributing towards the Big Q competition with the next round to be played in Warwick,” Gane said.
"The U14s boys had a much harder road, dropping a game in their pool round but made it all the way to the final against Toowoomba Saints finishing with 3-2 record.”
MBA U14 Girls and U16 Boys also qualified for finals but both bowed out in the semis.
U14s coach Travis Fisher said the enthusiastic squad had paid dividends for the first ever tournament medal.
"All eight players did their part and was collectively a team effort,” Fisher said.
