Basketball association making leaps with new competition
BASKETBALL: They may still be in the early stages of their launch, but the Maranoa Basketball Association are already making leaps in their progress with the announcement of their upcoming basketball competition in September.
The Maranoa Classic, set to run over September 3-4, is one of the first official competitions launched by the association this year, and it includes other basketball teams from across the region.
Committee member Katrina Hollingworth said the competition was organised to help promote the numerous basketball teams and increase the profile of the Maranoa Basketball Association.
"It's still fairly new with the association process, but we've invited teams from as far as Toowoomba and Emerald to help with the competition,” she said.
"New doors have opened since the association started. We are always looking to inspire with new teams, coaching classes, all that.”
Sponsorship from Maranoa Regional Council and the Department of Sport and Recreation has helped get the teams on their feet, but Ms Hollingworth said they were happy with the people getting involved in the new competition.
"We hope this new competition will draw some interest around the region; in the first tournament in 2014 we could only get 3-4 teams organised. Now, we have two whole ladies teams, along with all the school and senior teams,” she said.
