Baby girl found alone and 'eating leaves' outside church

THE mother of a baby found alone and dehydrated outside a Gold Coast church has been found.

A police spokesman said the mother was located "in the vicinity" of the Elanora church shortly before 6pm.

Officers are investigating how the child, believed to be between one and one and a half years old, came to be alone at the church.

Police were careful to say the girl was found "unaccompanied" rather than "abandoned".

Seven News reported the mother was upset and distressed as she and two children arrived at the church looking for her daughter.
